Koh Lipe Reviews : Traveler Advice on Koh Lipe - Review of Koh Lipe Castaway Beach Resort .
Koh Lipe Castaway Beach Resort : Fabulous!”
We stayed at this resort for our now regular tropical Christmas. We live in Thailand for many years now, and are used to imperfections one finds on the beautiful beaches of Thailand. But this place was something else: beautiful, clean and friendly. I found the rooms spacious (unusual for Thailand) and airy. It is probably the most environmentally friendly resort on the whole island: everything is built of wood, not a piece of concrete in sight! The restaurant and the bar area are very nice and comfortable and the staff have been very helpful, friendly and sweet. And the food and drinks are superb too, although from time to time they have been a little bit slow with orders.
Koh Lipe Castaway Beach Resort : Expensive but probably best on island!”
Visited this resort in February with my partner and two friends. Weare not backpackers but slightly older and wanted something more comfortable - The Castaway is about as comfortable as you could get on Koh Lipe from what we saw.
The island is very pretty with the most beautiful azure blue water which is lovely and clean - however clean is not an adjective I woud use to describe the island which is quickly getting over populted and littered. The side of the island the Castway is situated upon is far cleaner than the other side where noisey reggae music, boat noise and drunks seemed to prevail.
The accomodation was very clean and was simple - a shower rom/ toilet on the ground floor and steep wooden steps to a bed upstairs. There was a mosquito net over the bed and a wooden box with a lock. If you require more than this then it is not for you. For us it was fine for a short break.
We found the owner and staff very helpful and friendly. we also found the food and drinks good if slightly more than some other restaurants on the island but in our opinion it was worth it. Especially the breakfast which was very good quality.
Lots of steps and stairs without handrails around the hotel so not suitable for those with walking difficulties. Also there are no chairs in the chalets only cushions and hammocks - again problems for those with disabiities. However, as the island can only be reached by boat it is unlikely that this will bother the majortiy of guests as they wouldn't be able to get there anyhow!! We had a nightmare of a ferry ride from Langkawi to the resort and had to transfer from boat to ferry at sea which was not mentioned until we were already underway. Two of our party got injured during this transfer so be warned.
the diving centre attached to the hotel seemed to provide a large selection of dives but as we were not obviously his target audience one of the men there asked us rather rudeley to move away from the front of the dive centre to another part of the beach which we found quite offensive so perhaps this resort is soley for young divers?
All in all a clean hotel with good food with basic decor and fittings - I think it is overpriced for what you get but in terms of accomodation on Koh Lipe probably worth paying the extra. Due to the hazardous ferry transfers not somewhere I will return to.
Koh Lipe Castaway Beach Resort : Amazing space
Castaway is situated on sunrise beach at Koh lipe - a beautiful location with a fab wiev and a constant sea breeze. There are two kind of bungalow - the "old ones" which is one storey buildings and the brand new ones in 2 (bathroom on ground floor and bedroom on 1st floor). Both are made in natural materials - primarely wood and bamboo roof, fan, white curtans, thai style lamps, a wodden chest with a lock on - working as a safety deposit box, moscito net, king size bed, cold water shower - but very nice decorated in good combination of the best of thai mixed with scandinavian minimalism. Best of all they all have huge terasses with private hammocks, thai style madresses, and lots of charm. (Be aware that not all bungalows has seaview - i would recommend those with).
I have to make a small note about the old bungalows - bathroom and bedroom is seperated by a wall - but there are no door separating the two and therefore privacy is not an option!!!
The restaurant/dive center/ management office is build on a lifted terasse i 2 floors - right on the beach - it has a great atmosphere and the best view (laid back but at the same time very aware of offering the best service). They serve very good thai food and breakfast all day. Staff is very friendly, management is Hungary (speaks perfect english and is always ready with advise off any kind).
The place is maybe a bit overprized (3000 bath for the old bungalows, 4200 bath for the new ones) considering the fact that they only have cold water showers and fan - never the less i would definately go there again and would recommend it as a very nice place for relaxation.
Koh Lipe Castaway Beach Resort : mixed feelings
Koh Lipe is a lovely place, but is clearly getting busy - hopefully it won't overdose on the tourist thing. The great thing about it is the comfy access it provides to the rest of the national park, where you can get away from the hoardes.
I visited Castaway in February while on a trip to Koh Lipe with my partner and two of our friends. In short, the beach is good for roasting on, there's plenty of coral for snorkelling only a few metres into the water, and getting to and from the rest of the island's facilities is straightforward.
If you're not going to go for all out luxury resorts you'll probably end up staying in a bunglalow of some kind in Thailand. They come in all shapes and sizes, and can be anything from flash to falling apart. Castaway's bunglalows are made of dark wood with lofty, thatched ceilings and an integrated naturalistic shower area. They're comfortable with plenty of lounging space and some clear attention to detail. I'd say that they have certainly raised the bungalow design form to some kind of peak. The service was generally perky, comprehending and pleasant, and the rooms were cleaned daily which added that extra touch of comfort. Only the manager is a slightly grumpy presence.
So thumbs up so far, although I would point out that at 2500-3500 baht a night in high/peak season they don't come cheap. And indeed money was at the root of the main problem we had with the place.
When we checked our bill, we found that the wrong room rate had been used, the deposit that the we'd paid had not been deducted, and there had been some mathematical errors. Once we put this right the bill dropped from 59000 baht to 48000 baht which is a saving of about £200!
I'm being factual here as I don't know whether any or all of this happened with malice of forethought or just plain incompetence. All I'd say is make sure you leave enough time to check your bill before you leave.
