Things to Do

Loy Krathong

Celebrate Loy Krathong in Koh Lipe with floating krathongs, lantern releases, and cultural rituals. Discover eco-friendly ways to join the magic.

Each November, Koh Lipe glows under the full moon during Loy Krathong, Thailand’s Festival of Lights. Locals and travellers gather on the beaches to float lotus-shaped offerings across the water and release lanterns into the night sky. With gentle waves and starlit horizons, the island creates an intimate setting for one of Thailand’s most magical traditions.

Experiences to Try

On Sunrise Beach, you can craft a krathong from banana leaves, flowers, and incense before setting it adrift on the sea, a gesture of wishes and gratitude. At Pattaya Beach, the sky comes alive as hundreds of lanterns rise together, with many resorts hosting eco-friendly lantern-making sessions. Walking Street adds music and traditional dance, while the Urak Lawoi community honours sea spirits through rituals passed down for generations. For a quieter moment, Sunset Beach offers a more personal way to join the festival.

Best Time to Celebrate

Loy Krathong follows the November full moon, usually mid-month. The main activities begin after sunset, with lantern launches between 7 PM and midnight. Arriving early ensures a good spot on the sand and time to join workshops before the evening builds.

Eco-Tips

Choose krathongs made from banana stalks, coconut flowers, or bread, which naturally decompose. Avoid polystyrene bases and chemical candles, which pollute the sea. Many resorts and local groups now offer biodegradable lanterns to keep celebrations sustainable. Buying krathongs from Urak Lawoi vendors also supports village schools and community projects.

Costs and Essentials

Ready-made krathongs cost 50–150 THB along Walking Street, while workshops offer a more hands-on experience. Lanterns are often included in resort events or sold for around 100 THB. Bring a waterproof pouch for phones and money, wear light clothes and sandals for wading, and always ask before photographing locals or ceremonies.
