History and Economy

Koh Lipe was originally settled by the Urak Lawoi, also known as Chao Leh or sea gypsies, who relied on fishing and the sea for survival. Today, the economy is mainly tourism-based, with hotels, restaurants, diving and boat services supporting the community.

Across Thailand, the Urak Lawoi population is estimated at between 3,000 and 10,000 people, living not only on Koh Lipe but also in Satun, Trang, Phuket, Krabi and surrounding islands.
